Tutor Time May 5th

Today we had a group discussion, where we first wrote down answers to three questions,
'Positive experience of self directed research/ engagement with creative outlets / reading around subject'
I said that I had looked quite deeply into research and when we had the task of coming up with a business plan I began to find it interesting and research led me from place to place and I began to imagine the possibilities of creating something similar to use as a real plan. I also became much more aware of what is involved with setting up a business and how much has to be planned and taken into consideration before you can even start and the costs involved.

'Evaluation of managing own time and project work'
The management of my time seems to be working well and has probably improved from last term, I have been setting myself goals for when I want a piece of work finished and the majority of the time I have stuck to them and when I haven't it's usually because I've prioritized other work over it.

'Aspirations for future. How might they have changed? what prompted the change?'
My plans have changed as when I started I thought that I wanted to do graphics design but I found that I missed doing art the only time I was really getting to do it was in my free time and as I got further in to the course I lost the time to be able to do it.
I think my plans have changed as I try to picture myself doing graphics in the future and I can't really see it, I've lost some of the enjoyment of the work, although I really like the current project I still can't see myself doing it as a job yet. Art is something I really enjoy doing but it won't be sustainable so it will always be something I do in my free time. I also enjoy photography so I think this course is still very relevant as it gives me access to a little of all of these practices.

While having the discussion I took some notes that I thought were good or helpful such as to remain open to other influences, not to cut out everything else because you are studying one subject. When finding exhibitions not to say that you'll only go to ones that you think are in relation to graphics in my case but to go to different exhibitions as they might offer a different approach to thinking.
Talk to other students, that are higher level or have moved on, get advice as they have been through it and will probably have good tips of what to do or not to do. Also talking to people who are already in the jobs that you are looking into, get to know what it's like.

Some methods that other people were using to manage time were to use a white board in their room, notes can easily be added and changed, and it's a quick way of getting ideas down, I really liked this idea and think that this will be something that I will try, another suggestion was to write down things that you have completed as well as a list to do this way you get to see what you have achieved so far and this might give you an extra boost to go further.

Tutor Time April 28th

Today we did our portfolio website presentations I got a good response to mine and it was good to be able to see the work of some of the other people in my group, about half of them came in to do the presentation so it will be great when I get to see the rest of them.

Things that I learnt from doing these presentations and creating the website are that it is good to have a clear introduction and clear sections that lead into each area of the site. I categorized mine so that I has a section for art, graphics and development work. It was hard to tell if other peoples were easy to follow as they presented theres as a PowerPoint.

It was also suggested that we showcase our best work and not to dilute it with work that isn't as good.

Another key thing is to make sure you are prepared before showing the work, in my case I knew what computer I had to show my work on and from doing a previous presentation I knew that my external hard drive wouldn't work on it so I put my website on a small usb stick and tried it on other computers, but when it came to presenting the computer couldn't find all the webpages and the screen seemed to be zoomed in so looked horrible. I eventually used a laptop to show my website but one thing that I've learnt is to always be prepared even if it means having to bring in your own laptop as a backup way of showing the presentation, and to test it on both mac and PC.

Lastly to reduce image size, preferably to have them as jpegs but some of my images required a certain appearance that I got from using png which wouldn't be ideal for online as the files are much larger and could slow down the loading of the page, this isn't good for showcasing your work as people don't like to wait and if your work isn't loading there will be someone else's online that is so you could ,miss opportunities.

Potential employers

Today we discussed possible questions we could ask about an industry in general and directly to a company theses are some of the question we came up with.
General:
-How do you find clients?
-How does marketing work? how do you market yourself?
-What kind of equipment is used?
-How are contacts found?
-Whats happening in the industry at the moment?
-Who's at the top of the market? who do you look up to?
-Where are the jobs?
-Who gets the jobs? / kind of people
-How many employers are there?
-What kind of size are the companies?

Company:
-What qualifications do you require?
-Is working with other practitioners important? partnerships?
-What do you specialize in?
-Is there training for employees?
-What benefits / bonus's / support do you get? staff discount / commissions
-What work do you have / up and coming?
-How do you allocate work?
-How do you present to potential clients?
-How do you market yourself?
-Size of company?
-Structure of company? how it is organised / hierarchy
-Staff and roles
-Regularity of work?
-Income / salaries
-Skills / experience?
-What type of people are employed?
-Where do you advertise jobs?
-How long do people stay in their jobs?
-How many sites do they work on?
Ethics - influence on work?
-Health and safety requirements
-How are employees paid? hour / job / work

All these questions can help me with ideas when I contact an employer or company to try and get an idea of who is out there who could possible be a potential employer in the future.

Graphic Designer

Today we had a graphic designer from Brond come in to talk to us about his work and a bit about the industry. His company is made up of two main designers including himself and they bring other people in for specific jobs if needed.
Most of their work comes from referrals or by approaching a brand, suggesting improvements to start a conversation going which may lead to development and to a pitch.
He used to do product design at 14 and some graphic design work in his free time, then did A levels and foundation Art, he decided to go onto graphics as he thought it was more free than product design. Using interests that he had, he began finding himself jobs by asking companies that he was interested in such as O'Neil if he could show them some ideas, he did say that often first ideas were rejected but it opened the door for conversation and often lead on to him being able to do some design work for them.

Some advice that he gave us was that you need to develop skills quickly and always try to keep learning, be yourself, be original and be interesting. Working through holidays is a good idea as it is making you continue to learn and the more experience you have the better you can become and feel more confident about what you are doing.

What to consider when looking for a job.
prepare /presentation skills / keep active
really try to involve yourself in creating networks and contacts, meet people.
when you are producing your work know why you are making small decisions such as changing a font or color.
note down when you have sent your CV's and follow them up, employers might be looking for someone who is showing a real interest in wanting to work for them and might be more likely to consider you over others. Show energy and be a good communicator.
Ask open questions
Do you take people on? rather than have you got any jobs
Be flexible, if they invite you somewhere such as to a design show etc make sure you are able to go to make a good impression.

Interviews
show energy and enthusiasm be open and understood, show skills and ability, have the right attitude and make an effort.
When asked questions such as why have you done this say the obvious then expand on it.
If you have older work in your portfolio which you look at and think I could have done that better, then do it if you are thinking this then what is the person who you are showing it to going to think?
The interviewer might not be creative so explain to them why you have done something and why it works, why it is good.
Go to interviews with a question to ask even if it is simple as it will make them more relaxed and be better interaction.

If you are considering a brand update...
Look at the current design, make notes on it what is it telling you, colour, text, illustrations
consider how it could be changed, pick out the words that you don't want the brand to be saying and change them from the way they are currently linked to the design.

Unique
Everyone has a different life experience and outlook, make good use of this people will probably want to hear your opinion be engaging with a group discussion.

One way in which he designed a logo on request from a company was to first make the designs in black and white and create separate colour pallets and also to have the designs with different font changes such as upper and lower case bold and medium weight, under each design he wrote a few notes on why he had made the choice of colour, type etc so he could explain this easier to the company.

He said that it is important to have loads of interests, and not to guess but to use market research if you are unsure of something as knowledge leads to good design.
If you have an idea for a design write it down and if it doesn't sound good then it probably won't be

Spike Island Visit Write-up 3.2.11

On the visit to Spike Island there were two main exhibitions on show, the first was by Sean Edwards which included photography, film sculpture and drawings was a representation of time spent in a shopping center that was due for demolition, he made studies of his time there which is shown in his work on display.
Another section of his work 'Tea at my father's House' included a set of 13 photo studies which I found a little more interesting than the other work although neither really impresses me.

There was also another exhibition on show called 'Invocations of Blank Paper' by Martin Creed, Ryan Gander, Vlatka Horat, Gareth Long, Anna Molska and Ignacio Uriarte. The idea of the exhibition was that it "uses the blank page as a metaphor for the processes of creative expression" Again I didn't find this exhibition very good, if anything I was more distracted by the video clip of daffy duck placing in the corner, although the piece of crunched up paper in the stand did make me think a lot it was more of thinking how can you have this as an exhibition piece.

Spike Island itself has some good space for exhibitions, including large rooms for constructing any large pieces, and also has a  lot of studio space that people rent out, although we didn't get to see them exactly I can see that there is some good opportunity for working space in the future if I ever needed it.

Script

I wanted to add a little more interactivity to some areas of the site and decided to look into effects for the images, enlargements and slideshows. The first think I did was to look on Dynamic Drive as I had used it before and it has clear instructions to help edit the html.

I found this code which allows you to magnify sections of the images on mouseover

This is what it looks like on my page it also has an effect where you can choose the amount of zoom, and if you scroll while you have the box over the image you can zoom in more.

I also added this code for a fade-in slideshow on the main navigation page to fill the large gap but still have some good space.

When I saved the files to use on the website I made sure they all had names that were easy to locate and similar images I just changed the number to make it easy when editing to swap images in the html

Designing my website

I decided to start designing my website and once I start designing a website I can't stop
Using the navigation plan that I made before I based the pages that I needed on this.
I will have an intro, Contact page, CV and Portfolio page with more links to work

This is the main navigation page I wanted to keep everything very simplistic and clean so I've used mainly white and a slight bit of pink just to ad a small portion of colour to the pages.

This page links from the portfolio and currently has a link to my art and graphics work and a home page navigation that I drew up quickly in illustrator.

This is the page from the art work link and it shows a few of my piece of work, the image thumbnails are enlarged sections of the work and when you roll over them with the mouse they show the whole image, you can then click each one as a link and view the image in full.
Roll over effect

This page is one of the links to the enlargement of an image, I also added some arrow links so you can click through the images at the larger size without having to keep going back to the main menu.

My next step is to create an intro page, contact page and CV

Business Plan

Looking at magazine print prices, I found this website that gives you options to select to printing options and then generates a price based on factors such as colour or black and white print, page size and amount, paper quality and finish.

From the choices that I selected, to have 1000 copies printed would cost £1,527 which would mean the cost individually would be roughly £1.53, I think this would be quite expensive for an individual retail price. This cost is for 1000 copies with 48 pages including the cover and back, if this magazine was monthly and we needed this amount of money to cover just the printing costs we would need to have advertising income of at least £1,600 just to cover the cost of print, before considering the payment to designers and people processing the customer data for the add's.

Studio rent
I started doing a general web search for studio rent in Bristol and came across this 'gumtree' website and found this office space below for just £165 per month £38 a week.

I continued searching and found this perfect looking office space with a list of extra facilities included for £150 per month
So far considering monthly costs for print and office space rent if I was to select the second property and print 1000 magazine a month the cost would currently come to £1677

next considering who would need to be employed, as the magazine will initially be printed by a private company staff wont be required for printing but two people may be required to proof read the document and final layout and check the first print to make sure that it is correct.
There will have to be someone who sets up a data base for customers details and processing the adverts, also some way of keeping track of any accompanying images that might be used in the adverts. Most company's that offer advertising services usually have two main ways for the customer to contact them either via phone or email, depending on how busy the phone is it could require several people to take control of it. the person/ people who answers the phone would have to be able to speak clearly and record clearly the information that the customer provides.

The trade-it is a large paper that specializes in advertising of all sorts of things that are listed under categories within the paper and online and they originally started as just a paper so you would have to phone in to submit your advert and pay over the phone, however now the web is more popular they have a website where you can upload the advert and images yourself and you can select to publish it either just online for free if you keep it basic or there are a lot of options you can select to enhance the advert which you have to pay for including 'top ad' for £3.99 meaning that your ad stays at the top of searches where it is found.
You can pay £10.99 to have it featured on the home page of the website.

you can then also have it printed in the trade-it paper for £3 as just text or £5 with a photo, it says that it is 'proven to generate over 8x more response!'
There paper is local and regional and is seen by over 200,000 people per week, so this shows the scale of the business and just how wide spread it is.

This below shows the price details for a possible advert, I made up some information and choose the section it would be published under and these are the options that I have for publishing, added extras to enhance it or continuing with the simple web ad for free.

Their Print audience is 50,000 a week [source] and the papers currently retail at £1.20 that would mean an income of 60,000
I would be aiming to keep the company local to start with and may need to investigate how many papers would be needed to start up, how well they will sell.

Dreamweaver

Creating a basic four page website using images and text as links.
notes on creating the website:
site > new site > name it
Server technology > no
select file location [create a new folder that all the associated website files can be saved in including images etc]
Remote server > none
creating pages for the website
file > new > basic html

Extra Notes:
The selection of fonts are default because you don't have control over the way that the page will be viewed by others, if you used a created font or downloaded font that isn't installed on the computer that it is being viewed on the appearance will be different, dependent on font spacing and size etc.
Saving the page:
it is always best to save the pages when you start giving them easy to locate file names with no spaces as it could cause problems later with linking etc.
insert image
they can be dragged and dropped in from the folder on the right
or inserted, insert > image
When the files are open at the top on the tab you can see if it has been saved, if it hasn't been saved there will be an [*] at the end of the file name.
linking an image:
here I linked an image to a page and to do so you can either select the folder tool and then choose the page that you have saved or simply use the 'point to file' tool to select the file as shown below.

further notes:
Page color, Modify > page properties

Resizing images in photshop to use as thumbnails
image > image size
change width and height [maybe 75 pixels]

Adding images, tables and linking them.
Insert > table

Tutor Time

Focusing on Business Plans again we discussed as a group the ideas that we had each for a potential business.

The plan that I had thought of so far was the idea of creating a magazine/ paper & or website where people could advertise there creative skills, such as art, sculpture, web design etc.
The way in which the business would make money would be through people paying to advertise, the prices would be based upon the ad size if it was printed.
To make the magazine more accessible if it received enough ad's it could be sold for a low price or even available free to pick up. This might encourage more people to take a look at it and therefore it would become more popular hopefully meaning more people would like to advertise, gradually increasing the size of the magazine and amount of people wanting it.

We discussed things that we would have to take into consideration such as the target audience we were aiming at, if and who the competitors might be and the kinds of attention grabbing techniques that could be used to boost awareness of the company.

Another thing we discusses was the relevance of a business plan and why it's important, Banks will usually require a well thought out business plan if you are looking to take a loan out for a possible start up of a company, as they want to be reassured that they will get the money back, no one is going to give you money for just anything, it has to be sustainable and you have to be able to show them that it will be worth they're money to put into it.
If you need investment you need to consider what will attract people to put there money into your business, what makes your plan better than the next persons, unique selling point.
Business plans also make you consider how well the idea you have is going to work and if it will actually be worth it.

The next step I need to take is to look into existing business plans and decide how I can start writing mine based around the initial idea that I have.

Website & Tutor Time

Website Notes
The aim is to create a digital portfolio in the form of a website
First thinking about what the internet is used.. a form of communication, self promotion and a resource for research, news and information.
A web page typically consists of links as navigation and content which is visual or written.

The program that we'll be using is Dreamweaver which I know a bit about and have used to construct three previous web sites. I can work quite well with html code to so that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Issues that people face when designing a website, you don't have complete control of how it is going to look as there are many different ways that it will be viewed.
You first have different screen dimensions, if you create it on a small or large screen it will either be to bag and have a scroll bar along the bottom to fit it all on which never works very well if the page is intended to read down or it will be positioned in a strange place lost in the free space around it.
Then there are different web browsers and new forms of technology and ways of viewing it such as smart phones, games consoles, iPads etc.

Another issue to consider is image quality and which file type to use. The most commonly used for web would be gif. or jpg. as they are smaller files and the smaller the files for the content the faster the pages will load which is essential as people will become impatient waiting for the page to appear and might leave it for another site so you would have missed out on an opportunity for someone to see your work.
Jpg. is a compresses file that could be of image or text and it has unlimited colours.
Gif. is a graphic image file, that has limited colours of 256 so often they don't work well with photos as there are a lot more tones of colours in the photos so the image will become slightly distorted.

I took a photo and saved it as a jpg. and a gif. and you can see the difference in the backgrounds where the tones really start to blend and form new colours the gif can't pick this up so you start to see rough edges of colour.

My next step to take is to look at websites that I like visually and decide what sort of thing I want to create with mine, layout, colour, images etc.

The main structure for the website is shown below, It has to include an introduction link to CV, Contact page and Portfolio and from there it has to link to six portfolio piece minimum.
It can include video etc.

What I plan to do next is get some screen shots of my favourite web sites, not thinking about it from a design point of view to start with, then analyse them, see which I think work well and why that is then I can look further into the design of the ones I thought worked well.
I can then start planning the design and layout for my website.

Tutor Notes and Ideas
-Updated CV: improving and updating my CV, adding any changes of ideas, things learnt etc.
-Notes: Keep regular notes of exhibitions, events, journal articles of interest and any thing of relevance that I find interesting.
-Business Plan: Ideas for a hypothetical business
-Digital Portfolio of work: Could include development of piece, recent work in and out of class.
-Notes on potential employers: Be looking out for possible employers, ideas of who clients could be, who might employ you and what your role would be.
-Issues that you might face, ethical issues, rights and copyrights etc.

Working towards a work placement thinking about the work you are creating, where it will end up and who might employ you.

Portfolio presentation may be shown as the website if it is complete
keep notes on journals and screen prints of progress.
Records of where the information and ideas are from, bibliography of books, web links, tv, radio, film, documentary's etc.

Story Boards

A Rakes Progress -A series of eight paintings by 18th century English artist William Hogarth
Eight paintings that tell a story of a man who has come into fortune after his fathers death he spent it all and ended up in jail.

Tin Tin - Shows what could be camera shots establishing views [zoomed out, close ups]

Comic Novels, books

Storyboard -Film
Used by directors, camera man etc. gives an idea of shots, set, composition often done to a high standard as they will need funding to be produced so need to be impressive.
Usually drawn or produced in land scape form as that would be the format for Film or TV.

Cindy Sherman - Untitled Film Studies

Task
Find a poem, draw a story board for it relating to the lines in the poem then take photos for the ideas.
